Secret of the Lost Species (Chapter One)

Another Saturday Night at the Chez Weewoo, but I’ll actually be telling you what several members of the Guild have been doing this past week. Judge Hog had called myself and Jhudora to his office at Defenders Headquarters, along with Jhudora’s new apprentice Ariana Half-Faerie. Nimras, Reve and Ninjina, and Parrot had been summoned as well.

“We’ve had reports of a previously unknown species,” Judge Hog began as soon as we were seated. “No one knows for certain what they look like, although they have been described as something of a cross between a Xweetok and a Lutari. I suppose you might call them Xweetari.”

“Or Lutocks,” Jina suggested.

Judge Hog frowned. “Thank you Jina, but Xweetari will do nicely. Part of the reason we know so little about them is because their warriors wear large masks. They’ve always been a quiet folk, if elusive. But lately they’ve been very busy. Our scouts report that there are strange new edifices rising out of their forest.”

“You need someone to make certain that they aren’t planning mischief?” I assumed.

Judge Hog nodded. “The Xweetari have never harmed anyone, but we do like to catch any nefarious schemes early. This is Neopia, after all. Someone is always up to something. Your objective is to get in, determine what they are doing, and get out again without being discovered.”

He rose from his desk to give various items to certain members of our group. “You have all been selected for the combination of special talents you each possess. Even so, a couple of you need the versatility of a species change for the duration of this mission. We’ll put you back the way we found you when you’re done. Reve, would you mind being a Faerie Lutari for a while?”

“I didn’t think there was such a thing,” she remarked as she looked at the potion he gave her.

“That’s experimental,” he told her.

“An Island Uni?” Jina asked as she stared at her own bottle.

“Giving you a perfect combination of speed, strength and endurance,” he told her. “Parrot, your current appearance as a mutant Weewoo is perfect for secret reconnaissance, especially nocturnal. The rest of you will remain as you are. Jhudora, you might want to lose the gown.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“You know what I mean.”

“As long as you don’t expect me to wear spandex.”

We were taken to one of the larger chambers within the Defenders Headquarters where we could prepare for our mission. Reve took her potion at once, since her transformation from Lutra to Faerie Lutari was a relatively simple one. Jina was less certain about becoming a Uni. We warned her about transforming while wearing clothes for a different species, and she took her potion to a back room. When she returned, Reve was down on all fours buzzing her wings as hard as she could. The best she could accomplish was a brief appearance of weightlessness.

“What good is there in being Faerie if I don’t know how to fly?” she complained, then glanced at Jina. “All done? Are you ready to be fitted for horseshoes?”

“Very funny,” Jina answered as she began passing an empty potion bottle back and forth between her front hooves. “You know, I still have no idea how Unis do this.”

I experienced a moment of deja vu. Jhudora and Ariana returned then, dressed very much the same in jeans and loose hooded shirts with long sleeves.

Parrot moved closer to Reve to whisper. “Speaking of shoes, should we remind Ariana that not all Faeries run around barefoot.”

The Lutari shook her head. “This could be funny before it’s over.”

“Why do I have a sudden urge for carrots and apples?” Jina asked.

“That’s not unexpected,” Reve told her. “I have an urge for fish heads and a nice sea urchin.”

Ariana shrugged. “I just have an urge for a cherry slushy.”

At that moment a Poogle appeared with a cherry slushy, hurrying up to offer it to the Half-Faerie. She frowned. “For pity’s sake, that wasn’t a Quest!”
The beginning of the story arch most like a real story. It should be, considering that it weighs in at 10,000 words over nine chapters.
